In
South Carolina, more than 1 million gallons of used motor oil go
unaccounted for each year. This oil winds up in our ditches, storm
drains, roads, streams, and in landfills. Eventually, it enters our
groundwater supply.
Fairfield
has a program to help you dispose of used oil the right way -- Give
Oil For Energy Recovery, or GOFER -- a joint effort with
Santee Cooper to keep used oil out of our precious soil and water
supplies.
Just
take your used oil to one of our GOFER collection sites. Then, Santee
Cooper will collect the oil and burn it to generate electricity.
How to GOFER it!
To help
you properly dispose of used oil, please follow these tips:
- Drain the oil into a suitable container (no larger than 5 gal.),
such as a large plastic jug with a tightly fitting cap.
- Use a funnel to keep oil from spilling and keep the container
clean.
- Take the used oil to the nearest GOFER Convenience Station and
remember ...
- Don't mix oil with other liquids such as antifreeze,
gasoline, paint thinner, brake fluid or water.
- Pour oil carefully into collection station tanks to
minimize spillage. PLEASE KEEP YOUR GOFER STATION CLEAN!
- Reuse your used oil containers if possible. Never dispose
of them at the collection station and don't leave full containers at
the station after hours.
